Join us at WORD Jersey City for a storytime celebrating the life of Paul Robeson with his granddaughter Susan Robeson, a filmmaker, producer, and Jersey City resident.

ABOUT THE BOOK

The story goes something like this: Grandpa Paul was a world-famous actor and singer, a man of peace and principle who worried about the safety of children and families living in countries at war. He wanted to use his voice to promote social justice all over the world. Though people warned Grandpa Paul that it was too dangerous, he traveled to the battlefields of the Spanish Civil War to sing to the soldiers. And while he sang, there was peace.

With gorgeous illustrations from the fine artist Rod Brown, Grandpa Stops a War celebrates Paul Robeson’s global activism and towering achievements, and shows readers the power of music in times of discord and war.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Susan Robeson is a longtime documentary film and television producer. Her award-winning work has appeared on PBS, NBC and ABC affiliates and has shown at the Museum of Modern Art, Lincoln Center and numerous film festivals. She is currently producing a major motion picture on the life of her grandfather, Paul Robeson. Her first book, The Whole World In His Hands: A Pictorial Biography of Paul Robeson, was an ALA best book for young adults. She resides in the New York City area where she is an adjunct professor in film and communications and executive director of the Paul Robeson Foundation. Your local movie theater’s reclining seats are great and all, but does it have a grand chandelier in the lobby, fanciful sculptures and detailing, and a special movie organ that could reproduce hundreds of sound effects? Didn’t think so.

Join New York Adventure Club for an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of the historic landmarked Loew’s Jersey Theatre in Jersey City, one of the five Loew’s “wonder theatre” movie palaces built in the New York City area between 1929-1930.

Led by a Loew’s Jersey Theatre staff member, our unique experience at this opulent 3,000+ seat theatre will include:

  • A discussion around the history of the Loew’s Jersey and how the Friends of the Loews volunteer organization single-handedly saved the theater from demolition (and restored it with no funding)
  • A visit to the theater’s stage and backstage to see the intricate curtain pulley system
  • Walkthrough of the original lobby, parlors, and hallways
  • A look at the functioning Robert Morton “Wonder Morton” Pipe Organ, where the “Wonder Theatres” get their name
  • An exclusive visit to the theatre’s projector room to see its collection of historic projectors
