Throwbacks come on Tuesdays next week with a new art exhibit in Jersey City by masking tape artist Kayt Hester.

Hester, who has recently made headlines as a #HudsonCeleb and as a guest at Grumpy Cat’s birthday party in April, is best known locally for her bold, intricate art created with hand-torn masking tape.

Her upcoming fourth solo show at local art gallery and bar LITM, called “Ninety Summers Later,” brings viewers back in time to the 1920s, or 90 summers ago.

“I wanted to do a more serious show about Prohibition with historically accurate pieces but I realized it wouldn’t be as much fun and it felt like school, so I decided to do something fun with show girls and good times,” said the JC resident.

The show features showgirls, models and silent film actresses whom Hester says were some of the bravest women of their time.

Some #JC Celebs Pick Their Best Bets for Summer

Summer Dawn Hortillosa  at the The Jersey Journal heads out to JC and Hoboken to ask locals what’s hot for the summer!

What are you up to this summer?

I don’t belong to any organization putting on an event (although I hope to one day) but I’m really looking forward to a lot of local stuff.

Like what?

Metal Mondays at Lucky 7’s (322 Second St., Jersey City)–Justin Bornstein spins awesome metal all night long–I believe it’s a monthly event. Also Jaguar Shark, Cicada Radio, Holy City Zoo, Modern Chemistry and The Cartwheelers are playing Lamp Post Bar and Grille (9 p.m., 383 Second St., JC) on June 28. They’re all super great Jersey bands and always put on an amazing show, Holy City Zoo especially. There’s also the Art House Summer Blowout that day (8 p.m., 1 McWilliams Pl., JC) I’m definitely going to check out.

There’s Barcade’s 3rd of July party (12 pm, 163 Newark Ave., JC) and that day is also the Desir Decir EP release with Awkward Girls and Black Wail at Lot 13 (10 p.m., 169 Avenue E, Bayonne) which is obviously going to be unbelievable. What else, what else? Hmmm…oh, the Lucky 7’s Rock ‘n’ Roll BBQ on the 12th (1 p.m., 322 Second St.), which is the day after my birthday so I’m going to be out guns blazing!

What other events would you like to see here?

Hmm…I was going to say the fireworks, but I’m super excited that those are here this year too! (Freedom and Fireworks Festival, July 4, 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., Liberty State Park, JC). And I’d love a really cheesy carnival here. I mean, those are always a good time.

Art Exhibition “AUTUMNAL” Opening Reception at LITM

Tuesday, November 13th at 7:00 PM at LITM

The fall season brings with a cascade of sensations, the colors of the changing leaves, the scent of apples and spices, refreshing cooler temperatures, the taste of pumpkin pie and cider, the rustle of leaves and the crackle of the fireplace.

The artists in this exhibition have captured these sensations in their art work.

Check out more at LITM!

“The Deep and Savage Road”

Coming to LITM in October, “The Deep and Savage Road” featuring art by Katherine Ramos.
This series is an intimate, artifact-focused examination of private frenzy. As three girls attempt to manipulate their world and quietly grasp for hidden power, they descend from fascination and delight to vicious mania in their shared exploration of the occult.

Originally from San Diego, Katherine Ramos is a Brooklyn-based illustrator and artist. She has studied at New York University, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and The School of Visual Arts. Her illustrations have appeared in Double X, The New Yorker, and io9.

An acronym for Love is the Message, LITM is Jersey City’s neighborhood destination for creative seasonal cocktails, award-winning American food and the local art and film scene.  Every day offers its own unique experience- from the light-hearted and bouncy Friday nights, to the decompressing Monday happy hour fix, or Wednesday’s casual treat to a burger and beer- LITM has a day to fit your mood.

Monthly art shows and film screenings are home to LITM, with the 100th Art exhibition slated for April 2012.  The eclectic feel of the space attracts parties small and large- surprise birthdays, wedding receptions, baby showers, bachelorette parties and more!
