Summer is here and the Annual Jersey Fresh Farmers Markets are in full swing all over Jersey City. Jersey Fresh is an advertising and promotional program developed by the New Jersey Department of Agri- culture in 1983 to publicize the wide variety of fruits and vegetables which are grown here in the Garden State, providing residents with delicious, nutritional, fresh, home grown alternatives at reasonable prices.

Farmers Market shoppers also reduce their carbon footprint by purchasing locally grown and produced goods, getting more nutritional bang for their buck. Best of all, by the middle of summer, there will be a Farmers Market for every day of the week, making healthy shopping easier and better than it’s ever been before.

Jersey City now has seven of Hudson County’s Jersey Fresh Farmers Markets, where consumers can find a wide variety of goods, including fresh organic and conventional fruits and vegetables, baked goods – even seafood, fresh mozzarella, pickles, and flowers. While vendors and goods vary seasonally from market to market, all Jersey Fresh Community Markets include some vendors who accept Women, Infants, Children (WIC) and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) vouchers.

Kicking off the onslaught of fresh fruits and vegetables here on the Gold Coast is the Van Vorst Park Farmers Market, which begins on April 21st and runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays until November 2013.

Prefer to sleep in on the weekends? Not to worry! Late sleepers can stop by the Paulus Hook Farmers Market, which opens May 7th, and runs from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays through December 2013.

The Hamilton Park Farmers Market will take up residence once again from 3:00 p.m. to 7;30 p.m., Wednesdays, beginning April 17th. This year, the Hamilton Park Farmers Market plans to run until December 18th, 2013, providing fresh vegetables, prepared foods, cheese, and fruits until winter.

Back for a fourth year and the only market guarenteed to run rain or shine is the Newport Centre Mall Farmers Market.

Located in the corridor between Macy’s and Kohl’s on the ground floor of the Newport Mall, the Farmers Market begins June 5th and runs from 12 noon to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Beginning May 13th, the twice-a-week Historic Downtown SID Grove PATH Plaza Farmers Market will run every Monday and Thursday (with the exceptions of holidays) from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. until December 19th, 2013.

The Journal Square Farmers Market, located at the PATH Station directly across from the Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theatre on Kennedy Boulevard, is not only the city’s largest Farmers Market, but is also its longest running.

The Journal Square Farmers Market kicks-off its 19th year on Wednesday, June 14th, 2013, and will run all day, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., once a week on Wednesdays until September, when the time the Market is open shortens an hour, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., until Thanksgiving.

Riverview Fisk is back on the fresh food circuit and will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Sundays, beginning May 5th and continuing until October 27th. For more information on the Riverview Fisk Market, read more here.
