JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Jose Martinez knew it was time. He found his soul mate in his girlfriend of 2 ½ years, Elizabeth Carmona. The couple had found the perfect home at Madox in Jersey City’s Paulus Hook. The only uncertainty was: “How to ask the question before the question?”
“I had gone through different plans in my mind to ask Liz to marry me,” Mr. Martinez recalls. “I wanted it to be perfect.
“The apartment we leased at Madox would be a first true home together. It was a new place and a new beginning for us. And I knew how excited Liz was about moving in. So when we received the invitation to a catered lifestyle event introducing residents to Madox and the Paulus Hook neighborhood, I realized it would be a symbolic place to propose.”
Mr. Martinez consulted with the leasing agents at Madox and devised a perfect plan. He convinced Ms. Carmona to attend the opening party to see exactly what their new home and the completed building looked like. Mr. Martinez left work early and arranged flower pedals in a heart shape with the words “Will U Marry Me?” in candles in the apartment they’d be moving into.
“Liz was running late and all she wanted to do was head to the building’s rooftop to get a drink,” Mr. Martinez recalls. “I made an excuse to go to the apartment. When we walked in and she saw the flowers I got on one knee and proposed. It was a perfect setting. Our brand new home and the next step in our relationship. Everything came together so well and we were both so excited. I definitely got a few pats on the back for the plan.”
Mr. Martinez and Ms. Carmona started their new lives at Madox as one of the first residents of the building in early December. The couple found the 131-home eco-friendly rental building after deciding to move from the Upper East Side apartment they shared to obtain more space and room for parking.
“We wanted to move out of New York City and Liz had lived in Jersey City before,” Mr. Martinez says. “So we decided to narrow our search to Jersey City and Brooklyn. We discovered Madox online and as soon as we visited we were amazed and it jumped right to the top of our list.
“Inside, the homes are open and there’s tremendous space. We also loved the island kitchen and the brand new furnishings and appliances which give the apartment a condominium style-feel. The amenities and rooftop are spectacular and we can’t wait to begin enjoying them. The monthly rent was right within our budget and the added bonus that comes with the energy conservation in a green building has us hopeful to see savings on our monthly utility bills.”
Mr. Martinez and Ms. Carmona both work in downtown Manhattan, making Madox’s close proximity to transportation into New York City ideal.
“Transportation was important and with New York Waterway Ferry to downtown just a short walk away, we have a very efficient commute to and from work,” Mr. Martinez says.
Madox is being developed by Fields Development Group in Jersey City’s historic Paulus Hook. The seven-story building is on schedule to earn the first LEED certification for a residential building in Jersey City. Green elements incorporated into Madox include a PV Solar Array and vegetation on the roof, electric car charging stations, and systems to reduce water consumption by over 45% and energy consumption by 14%. The building will also be under contract for at least two years to provide 35% of its electricity from renewable sources.
Madox will also boast a 100% smoke-free environment, a unique lifestyle feature that is one of the first of its kind in New Jersey and a rarity in the New York Metropolitan marketplace.
Situated at 198 Van Vorst Street in Paulus Hook, Madox will offer residents a desirable, urban neighborhood setting boasting charming tree-lined streets dotted with historic brownstones and an eclectic array of local shops and restaurants. Several waterfront marinas border the neighborhood, while nearby Liberty State Park offers a green oasis for active and passive recreation, including miles of walking, biking and jogging paths, endless open space and spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
Madox features a mix of studio, one- and two-bedroom residences with some one-and two-bedroom homes also offering dens, a significant advantage for young couples looking to start a family or single professionals hoping to add a roommate without increasing their monthly rents by fully upgrading to a larger size apartment.
Initially priced from around the $1,800s, the well-designed residences at Madox offer from 480 to1,312 square feet of luxury living space complemented by high-end amenities and finishes. Found throughout the homes are custom hardwood floors, 9’ceiling heights, washer/dryer in every home, and master baths with custom vanities and tile. Gourmet kitchens feature custom 42” cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, gas cooking, Caesarstone countertops, tile floor and backsplash, and designer lighting and fixtures.
An exciting suite of onsite amenities will help foster a close-knit, family-friendly environment. Residents will enjoy a keyless entry system, 24-hour doorman, state-of-the art gym, a lobby lounge with a library, business center and communal technology table with iPad Station, iMac and PC; and a residents’-only lounge with children’s play area, yoga room, kitchenette, two TVs and more.
Social interaction will continue outside with a landscaped courtyard featuring a children’s play area, café seating and benches; two common 8th floor terraces and a common roof deck with hammocks, natural gas fired BBQ, fire pit, lounges for sun bathing and magnificent views of NYC, the Statue of Liberty and an active marina. Valet garage parking and bicycle storage will also be available.
