Con Vivo Music Presents Sarah Nelson Craft

sarah-nelson-craftSarah Nelson Craft returns to CVM’s stage with a program featuring major, lengthy vocal works that present women’s stories from their point of view: Robert Schumann’s “Frauenliebe und leben” and John Harbison’s “Mirabai Songs”. Opera News described Mrs. Craft’s 2016 Carnegie Hall solo Spotlight Recital as “exquisite… glowing… charming…” and Con Vivo Music is very excited to bring her performance to Jersey City.

One of Schumann’s truly iconic song cycles, “Frauenliebe und leben” chronicles the love story and life of a young woman, who takes on very traditional roles of wife and mother. While the poetry is not very progressive, it was unique in its time for delving deep into the mind of a woman and telling the story from her perspective.

“Mirabai Songs” is a setting of ecstatic religious poetry in 16th-century India by woman poet Mirabai. When her husband was killed in a war, Mirabai refused to die on his funeral pyre, as was the custom. Instead, she left her family compound, wrote her poems to Krishna, the Dark One, and sang and danced them in the streets.

Con Vivo Music Presents a Musical Portrait of Claude Debussy

Debussy Portrait Concert

FREE, all ages welcome
Saturday, May 6, 2017,  2:30-3:30pm
The Barrow Mansion – 83 Wayne Street, Jersey City, NJ

Con Vivo Music presents a pause to Saturday afternoon with an intimate concert celebrating the work of French Impressionist composer Claude Debussy, featuring music for voice, violin, saxophone, and piano. With a program that represents the wide-ranging voice of an ardent musical innovator, this chamber concert is the second of Con Vivo Music’s 2017 season, and is free and open to the public.

debussy-webDebussy is one of the earliest pioneers of Western music crafted from non-traditional tonalities and World Music influences. From his earliest studies, his urge for musical rebellion became the major theme of his creative output, leading him to develop a unique voice that is both consummately beautiful as well as unceasingly refreshing. His artistic philosophy and aesthetic were indelibly linked to those of the Impressionist and Symbolist artists, through the sense of community they built together as they redefined the boundaries of their respective crafts, including Claude Monet, and the symbolist poet Stéphane Mallarmé, both of whom were also close friends with Debussy as well as collaborators. While early criticism of the Impressionists was brutally harsh on the whole, their artistic movement led the Western arts profoundly into the 20th century, and supported the environmental conditions that enabled Debussy to thrive in his musical output. Honoring his contribution to the French arts, he was named Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1903.

About Con Vivo Music (from website)

Con Vivo Music is a collective of musicians including some of the NYC area’s finest soloists and rising stars. We bring the communal spirit of chamber music to the vibrant and unique setting of Jersey City, organizing and performing free concerts all over town. Con Vivo’s Artistic Director is saxophonist Zach Herchen.

Our mission is to provide world-class music for all audiences, regardless of class, location or income. All of our concerts are completely free.

Con Vivo Music was founded in 2007 by Amelia Hollander Ames after spending three years in Israel as violist of the Israel Contemporary String Quartet and Tel Aviv Soloists. Upon returning to her hometown of Jersey City, she dreamed of playing chamber music for the full range of Jersey City’s vibrant population at the same high level that she had in Israel and elsewhere around the world. Amelia partnered with the Jersey City Department of Cultural Affairs, which exclusively funded Con Vivo’s first two seasons of concerts. In 2009, Con Vivo Music became an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and spread its wings, fed by the creativity and virtuosity of its core musicians and the enthusiasm of its audiences.
